What is healthy food?


After reading the two articles, we can easily understand that both of the authors want to tell us what kind of food that they believe is good for people’s health.

In the first article “History of Food Advice” which is written by Dupuis, the author points out that people nowadays are influenced by the popular articles too much on choosing the food they eat. He says that “Because we have lost our faith in both religion and science as guides to eating, we rely on popular writers to steer us through a welter of confusing and contradictory information.”(p34) He first writes about in the early nineteenth century, people more believe in god and their traditional, they have their own believe on what is healthy. In order to change their mind, some scientist begins to use bible to improve themselves. They say that “When direct angelic advice was missing, food reformers used a peculiar semi-scientific deism as their method, counting on the Bible to provide them with scientific data about a better future. For example, the early food reformer Robert Hartley “proved” that God intended humans to drink milk because He showed preference for the pastoralist Abel over the ploughman Cain.”(38) They also sys Americans eat too much meat, they use data to improve that American work eat over meat every day and compare them with the German workers.

In the second article “Unhappy Meals” which is write by Pollan, the author shows his point view that really interest me. First of all, he believes that we should believe in the food that old people choose, the things that people begin to eat from a long time ago is must good for their health. Secondly, Pollan believes that people nowadays eat too much; it is more than what they need. Eating as much as you can is not good for your health, however, eat until you do not feel hungry is enough. The quality is more important than the amount. Thirdly, he points out people should eat more kinds of food, only meat and basic vegetable are not enough, we should also eat fruit. More types of food mean more kind of nutrition.

Nowadays, because people can have a better life than before, so we have the ability to choose the food we want. So, many people just eat the food they like but not care about if it is healthy. I think we should follow the idea of the scientists, so that we can get have the healthy choice.
