After a quarter’s learning of writing skill, the thing I learn
which help me the most is searching the resource to support my idea. Before I take
this class, I never use any others idea to prove my point, however, after
learning the writing skill in this class, I notice that using others point of
view is also important. For most of the readers, the opinion of a group of
people is more believable.

What is healthy food?
After reading the two articles,
we can easily understand that both of the authors want to tell us what kind of
food that they believe is good for people’s health.
In the first article “History of Food Advice” which is written by Dupuis, the author
points out that people nowadays are influenced by the popular articles too much
on choosing the food they eat. He says that “Because we have lost our faith in
both religion and science as guides to eating, we rely on popular writers to
steer us through a welter of confusing and contradictory information.”(p34) He first
writes about in the early nineteenth century, people more believe in god and
their traditional, they have their own believe on what is healthy. In order to
change their mind, some scientist begins to use bible to improve themselves. They
say that “When direct angelic advice was missing, food reformers used a
peculiar semi-scientific deism as their method, counting on the Bible to
provide them with scientific data about a better future. For example, the early
food reformer Robert Hartley “proved” that God intended humans to drink milk
because He showed preference for the pastoralist Abel over the ploughman Cain.”(38)
They also sys Americans eat too much meat, they use data to improve that American
work eat over meat every day and compare them with the German workers.
In the second
article “Unhappy Meals” which is write by Pollan, the author shows his point
view that really interest me. First of all, he believes that we should believe
in the food that old people choose, the things that people begin to eat from a
long time ago is must good for their health. Secondly, Pollan believes that
people nowadays eat too much; it is more than what they need. Eating as much as
you can is not good for your health, however, eat until you do not feel hungry
is enough. The quality is more important than the amount. Thirdly, he points
out people should eat more kinds of food, only meat and basic vegetable are not
enough, we should also eat fruit. More types of food mean more kind of nutrition.
Nowadays,
because people can have a better life than before, so we have the ability to
choose the food we want. So, many people just eat the food they like but not
care about if it is healthy. I think we should follow the idea of the
scientists, so that we can get have the healthy choice.

thoughts on eating practices
i am a person who only eat meat, no matter what kind of meat porklamb or even frog. i eat vegetable nearly once a month when my parents are not force me to do that. this eating habbits brings me a lot of health trabble, however, i never think i should change my eating habbit. i believe that we should enjoy the thing we like when we are young, i do not care about how long i can be alive but i think enjoy the present life is the most important thing.
after reading difei's paper
after reading difei's paper, i know that he is talking about yogurt is good for our health. in his paper, i find something that interest me. first of all, he points out that how much nutrasion in the yogurt is depends on the milk they use. he also use the medicaal journal to show us the nutrasions both in milk and yogurt. secondly, he says that eating yogurt can help us to keep away from disease. it not only can help us to defence some normal illness like catching a cold, it can also help us to against the Colon Cancer.
Chicken nugget
Chicken
nugget is a popular food in America, both children and adult like it. After I come
to America, I can nearly find chicken nugget in every meal, and we also like to
buy them from the market and cooks by ourselves. However, does eating chicken
nugget good for our health? I do not really think so.
First
of all, I want to talk about the resource about the chicken nugget, which is
the chicken in America. I have once watched a movie called the “food inc”, it
talks about how does the farmers in America feed the chicken. The chicken in America
is really unhealthy; they cannot even walk by themselves until they died. They
lives in a small dark house from they born, in order to let them grow fast,
they cannot see the sunlight in their whole live. Every day, the farmers throw
some food in to their house to keep their life. The place where the chicken
lives in is really dirty, they live in the shit and pee of themselves but no
one helps them to clean it. I think they are more preferred to die than alive. After
they get killed, they will be disinfected by using the Chlorine
water, which is really unhealthy for people, and that is why the chicken bone
in the KFC is different with normal color, it is more like a black color. As a result,
the chicken in American is really not a good choice to eat.
Secondly, chicken nugget itself is not good for people’s health. On
one hand, chicken do not have much nutrition compare with other meat, on the
other hand, too much oil is harmful to people. Especially when we buy the
chicken nugget from the market and hit by ourselves, we may put more oil in it.
My friends once tell me the way that how the factory makes the chicken nugget
which is report on the newspaper, which really make people feel disgusting. In order
to earn more money, they use the whole chicken to make the chicken nugget and
they do not want to “waste” any part of it. They crash the whole chicken into
the muddy flesh minced meat; include the bones and some unhealthy part. This makes
me uncomfortable every time when I eat the chicken nugget, I always feel that I
have already eaten the chicken ass. I have checked a medical journal that talks
about the food safety about the chicken nugget in McDonalds, I the article, the
author points out that they find there are some unhealthy additives like rubber
in the chicken nugget of McDonalds. After this thing was reported by the media,
McDonalds stand out and said it was use to stop the air get into the nugget
when it was boiled, and they also said that it was conform the law in our
country, however, this attracted a lot of people and they found that this
additive is just used for keep the nugget into a square and this additive was
not checked by the government.
In conclusion, chicken nugget is not good for our health, although
it is tasty, we should not eat too much.

after reading their food jurnals, i find that most syudents more like to choose a chinese restaurant. some of us right about eating hot pot in zechi's home, that is the most interesting part. also, some people do not like to eat breakfast here because they more enjoy to sleep.

The food I ate from Thursday to Sunday
On Thursday, I went to the cafeteria for breakfast. I ate three
types of food: chicken leg, mash potato, and pasta. Also, I ordered a cap of
coke for drink. For lunch, I go to the jason’s thai with my friends, I ordered
a thai tea for drink and ate a sushi and a dish of lamb. For dinner, I just
went to the cafeteria again, however, I only ate some pizza. I felt very hungry
at night, so, I went to Dresco to have a free meal at about 9 o’clock. I had some
French fries, chicken nuggets, and an egg roll.
On Friday,
I get up late, so, I did not have anything for breakfast. For lunch, I go to
the Pho and ate a bowl of noodle. At the dinner time, I went to the cherry creek
shopping center and ate some sushi and a bowl of wudong noodle. At about 11 o’clock,
I was really hungry and I ordered papa john’s for 20 chicken wings.
On Sunday,
I did not eat breakfast. For lunch, I just had a piece of pizza. For dinner, I had
a really great meal, Zechi Zhang invite us to his home and had a hot pot
together. We had lamb, beef, shrimp and meat ball etc. the food ate with the sesame
sauce taste really nice. We also had many types of drinks.

Cuttlefish ball
Last
week, ZECHI invited us to his new apartment to have a Chinese traditional hot
pot. Around all the food we had include lamb, potato and vegetables, the thing
most interest me is the fish ball. The fish ball we bought was made of
cuttlefish, which is the most popular one in our country.
Fish
ball in CHAO ZHOU
When
I ate this fish ball, I remember the fish ball I had before in our country.
Fish ball have many different levels, and people have often eat it can easily
find the difference between the good one and the bad one. A bad fish ball is
always made by flour and a little bit cattle fish, which I always ate when I
was a kid. A bad fish ball is very soft, it is easy to over hit in the hot pot.
A good fish ball is totally different with the bad one, the whole ball is made
of fresh cuttlefish, and it is much harder than the bad one, you can also put
it in the hot pot for a long time and does not need to worry it maybe melt in
the hot water. In china, there is a province called CHAO ZHOU, and it is really
famous for making fish balls. First of all, it is in the southern part of
China, so, they have a good resource to get the fresh fishes. Second, they also
have a very strict step when the fish ball was produced, and after they get the
product, they also need to check the quality of the fish balls. A qualified
fish ball must bounce to a specific height. So, most people in our country like
to choose the fish ball which is produced in CHAO ZHOU.
How
do people make fish ball
I
have once watched a movie that told me how to make a fish ball. First of all,
they put the cuttlefish on a machine to separate it into two part, they only
use the body part to make the fish ball. Then, they clean the cuttlefish and
keep only the white meat. After this, they put the cuttlefish on a board and
use the back of the knife to pat the cuttlefish in order to make it looser, and
then, they use the knife to cut the fish into minced meat. Second, they need to
add some cold soup in it and some onion ginger juice.
Third, they need to stir it in one way and add oil, salt, egg white in.
finally, make it into fish balls and throw them into the hot water, fresh
cuttlefish balls come out.
The
invite of fish ball
There is a very interest story that tells us how people in
ancient china invite the fish ball. The first emperor of QIN Dynasty is a very
cruel man, he liked to eat fish and there must be a dish of fish every meal,
however, he did not want to see the fish bone. The cook also could not make the
bones into powder; he thought it was a curse to him because he did many bad
things in his life. So, many cooks were killed by him. One day, a new cook
needs to cook the fish for the emperor, he did not know what to do and thinks
he might be killed, so, he became so nervous and used the knife to pat the fish
crazily to show his angry. Suddenly, he saw a thing that surprised him that all
the bones of the fish had come out by themselves, as the dinner time quickly
came, he quickly picked all the bones out and made the fish into the fish balls
and put in the soup he already prepared before. So, when the emperor saw the
fish ball which was white and looked really good, he was very happy.
People should protect the cuttlefish
Recently, I have seen a research paper which is from the
United Kingdom that shows us the decrease of the cuttlefish. In the research,
it tells us the change of amount in recent 10 years. Although the quantity of
cuttlefish had increased in last year, the total amount is much less than 10
years ago. I have also check the research in our country, in shows the same
thing with the first one. So, we should begin to protect cuttlefish. We cannot
let people do not eat cuttlefish; however, we can invited some new skills to
rise the cuttlefish by ourselves.

the compare of the three articles
After reading the three
articles, I find that the similar part of the three of them is they all talks
about the food resource.
In the first article “An
Animal Place” which is written by MICHAEL POLLAN, he talks about that the relationship
between human and animal. He says that animals are really easy to die in the
wild, so, when they become a resource of food, it is not always a bad thing. People
provide them place to live and give them food to eat, they have a better like than
in the wild, and they also provide the food resource for people, it is benefit for
both of them.
In the
second article “Estabrook - Tomatoland -
Introduction”, the author writes about the difference
between the tomatoes from different place. He points out that the location of
where the tomato grows will make difference of their taste and shape. So, by
compare their taste and how are they looks like, we can find out the different
history of production.
In the
third article “Cook – ‘Fowl Trouble’”, the author wants to tell us the harmful of the broiler chicken. This article
talks about the terrible process of feed chicken nowadays. Compare with several
years ago, how quick workers feed a chick is not depends on their skills any
more, it just depends on the amount that USDA allows them to feed per minute. The
chickens nowadays are also much heavier than before. They grow up in a place
called “of-fal-room”, the worker also face some dangers here.
After reading
these three articles, the most noteworthy thing I find is the harmful of the chicken.
I have once watched a movie called “food inc”, it clearly told me that how
terrible were the process when the chicken grew up.

Response to "Our National Eating Disorder"
In the article “Our
National Eating Disorder”, the author Pollan tell us that why eating disorder
happens in America, and he also talks about who people do not eat healthy. To improve
his point of view, he gives out two reasons. First of all, he says that a big problem
is because immigration. The United States is a country which combines with many
different countries, people from all over the world come here, and of course they
like to choose different types of food. Another
reason is that the government sometimes influences people’s choice by making
some eating guidelines. Although it may not really help people to choose the
healthy food, most people like to believe in it. Just as the author says in the
article that:” A scientific study, a new government guideline, a lone crackpot
with a medical degree can alter this nation’s diet overnight”. These are the
two main reasons why people in America eating disorder.
I am agree with the
point that immigrate will cause the eating disorder. I am a Chinese student who
studies in America, so, I can easily understand the feeling that people in Asian
country feel about American food. The fast food culture in America is really
hard for us to accept. So we always choose some Chinese restaurants here to
have our dinner. That is also one of the reasons that we are hard to make a foreign
friend. This is a point that we should try to improve.

Different food cultures in China
In china, each province
has its own cooking system. People in northern part of china and southern part
of china have totally different food cultures. People who live in deferent
place have different characteristics, this also lead people eat different
things. For people who live in northern part of china, most of them are
strength, so the dishes here are always very big but not really good looking.
In southern part of china, people are clever and really good at business, so
dishes here are always small but good looking.
I
am come from Beijing, and we also have our own cooking system. However, because
Beijing is the capital city of China, so, there are many people who come from
other province come to Beijing every year, and the population of these people
is much more than the locals. In order to let people from other province can
have their own food in Beijing, and many restaurant of other cooking system
come out in Beijing. So, Beijing’s food system is more like a combination of
the whole country. Most of the local Beijingers enjoy this kind of life because
they can have the food all over the country but do not need to go to other
province.
How do the “old
Beijingers” eat?
There
is a word “old Beijingers” in our country, it is means a group of people whose
family have lived in Beijing hundreds or even thousands of years. They are the
real local people of Beijing. They live in “hutong” which is totally different
from the tall building in down town. Because of this, they have they own
culture and a food system which is totally different from others. The food that
“old Beijingers” eat is really taste strange, which people from other province
or even young people who born in Beijing cannot really bear it. “Old
Beijingers” have a really simple food system; they eat one kind of food nearly
every day. There is a food called “douzhi” that “old Beijingers” have it every
breakfast, however, other people cannot even bear the smell of it, actually
nearly none of the people around me can eat this.
How do people normally
eat?
For most of people, we have really a lot of choices for
what we eat. For breakfast, some people learn the western country to eat eggs,
breads and drink milk. However, most of us like to have something make of flour
for breakfast like “baozi”, “youtiao” and noodle. People also like to drink
porridge in the morning because they believe it is good for our health. All of
these are Chinese traditional food.
People in our country believe that launch is
as important as dinner, but there is still some difference between this to
meals.
For
launch, usually we do not have enough time to have a great meal because we need
to go to school and our parents need to go to work. When we are at school, the
only thing we can eat for launch is the restaurant around us. Most of them are
western restaurant because it is really quick to eat western food. However, the
tastes of these restaurants are not the same as what I eat in American, I think
these restaurant change their style more fit the locals. At that time, pizza
hut is the restaurant which I like most, you can not only have western food
like pizza food there, but also you can order some Chinese food like fried rice
which really taste like our local food.
Dinner
is always the biggest meal in our day, because we have enough time to enjoy
this meal. Especially because my mother is a teacher, so, she finishes her work
earlier than others and has enough time to prepare this meal for us. I always
believes that my mom is a good cook and she can cook different dishes and do
not have anything the same for a whole week. In our country, people nearly eat
rice or flour every day. Because I like to eat things which are really salty or
spicy, so, I need more than a bowl of rice for each meal. I like to eat meat
much more than vegetables, especially the lamb, which is really hard to find in
America. I really like to eat hot pot, and most of the Chinese like it. In our
city, the best restaurant which cook hot pot is called “HAIDILAO”, you need to
wit every day since it opens. The food I like most for hot pot is lamb and
meatball, and I go there every week. I especially like the sesame sauce there,
a good sauce is one of the most important thing for hot pot.
If
you want to find something to eat at midnight, the best choice all over the
country is the meat string, which all people like it. It is like some small
meat piece string together and baked on fire. You can find this everywhere and
it really smells and tastes good.
If
you want to make a successful restaurant in Beijing, no matter what kind of
food you make, you must fit the local culture. People in Beijing have the same
characteristics with people lives in northern part of China, most of us do not
care about what the dish look like, and so, you do not need to make the food so
pretty. The thing we really care about is the taste and whether you have a big
quantity of food. That is why Shanghai food restaurant is not popular in
Beijing, the dishes there are too small and we do not like to go there.
However, food in
southern china especially in Guangdong is totally different. People in
Guangdong especially show the character of people who lives in southern part of
China.
After
I came to Denver, I went to a Chinese restaurant called “starkitchen”. It is
the only restaurant that makes southern China’s breakfast in Denver, which I
had never, eat this type of food before in China. It opens at 9 o’clock every
day and the breakfast close at 2:00 pm. The food they make for breakfast is
traditional Guangdong desert and it tastes really similar with the restaurant
in our country. So, many students in DU and Chinese people who live in Denver
really enjoy the food there. I can always see some students study in DU who
does not have classes in the morning go there for breakfast.
I
went to the starkitchen on Saturday afternoon at about 1:30 pm, because in this
way I could see the difference between breakfast and dinner. The star kitchen
was always full of people, so, I waited for about 10 minutes to get a sit. In
the starkitchen, you could also share a table with others who was waiting for a
sit; however, I did not like to sit with others. I came here with three of my
friend, after the waiter lead us to the site; we began to watch the menu. All
the food here for breakfast is traditional desert like Shrimp Dumpling, Steamed
Beef Meat Ball and Baked BBQ Pork Bun. Most of Chinese people like to eat thing
made of flour, so, the dishes we ordered were most like dumplings and bread. These
dishes were really small, each dish has only 3-4 pieces in it, however, it was
good looking. When we order the dishes, we do not need to tell the waiter that
what we want and let them cook together. There was some food cars in the
restaurant, and all the food they have were on the car. So, by this way, you
could not only see what did the food look like and how large it was, but also
you could get the fresh food whenever you want. This kind of breakfast is very
popular in Guangdong; they liked to come with their friends on business
together because Chinese people believe that having a meal with others was
really a good way to communicate. So, people in Guangdong do not called this
meal breakfast, they have their own name of this king of meal---“zao cha”. In
Guangdong, most of people have a very open mind; there is the only place in
China that people do not care about if you are graduated in a famous
university. People in Guangdong believe that if you work hard and have a clever
mind, you can be success. So, many young people in China like to go to
Guangdong to start their own business. In this way, Guangdong becomes a really
important city, and more and more people begin to have their friends on
business. A talk of a business idea always need a lot of time, so, people in
Guangdong like to find a quiet place and have a talk with their partners. The
words “zao cha” is means drink tea with friends in the morning, and Chinese
people think that a good environment can help them to have a clear mind. So, drinking
tea and having some desert become very popular in Guangdong. So, the food car
can help people to get some hot and fresh food whenever they want.
Most
of the people in the restaurant are from the southern part of China, include
the waiters. I could easily find that these people had a Guangdong accent when
they are talking. Many of them came here with the whole family, for those
Chinese people who lived in Denver; it was really hard to find a Chinese
restaurant like this. Actually, you could find that more than 50 percent
Chinese who lived in America were from the province like Guangdong or Fujian;
this could also show that people from these places like to show their ability
and make a living wandering from place to place.
After
2:00 pm, the dishes had totally changed. The food car stopped provide people
more food and people begin to use the menu to order some local Guangdong food.
At this time, people became much less than the morning because Guangdong do not
really famous in its dinner, and only some real Guangdongers like these food.
We also finished our meal and left the restaurant.
In
China, people lives in different places have totally different characters that
lead to their different life style. I do not trying to say which is better,
because as the time goes on, people should learn how to fit each other’s
culture.

Chinese who lived in America were from the province like Guangdong or Fujian;
this could also show that people from these places like to show their ability
and make a living wandering from place to place.
After
2:00 pm, the dishes had totally changed. The food car stopped provide people
more food and people begin to use the menu to order some local Guangdong food.
At this time, people became much less than the morning because Guangdong do not
really famous in its dinner, and only some real Guangdongers like these food. We
also finished our meal and left the restaurant.

Eating at the Edge (re)
In the article which is
written by Horwitz, we can find the author gives out his point of view that in nowadays,
more and more people eating alone instead of eating with their families or
friends. For example, Horwitz asks us to “Consider soup. What was once an
archetype of the commensal is now widely available in a variety of
single-serving packages” (42). In the
article, the author uses an example of soup to improve his point of view. Many
years ago, when people ordered a soup, the only choice is a big bowl of soup
and you can share it with your family or friends. However, nowadays, people are
more like to order a small bowl of soup which is just for one person. There are
two reasons why people have this change, one is it may more fit their own
taste, on the other hand, people nowadays are always so busy, and they do not
have a time schedule. So, it is really hard for people to have a meal with
others in a time fit both of them. This kind of things also happens in my own
life. In china, if people do not have something really important, most people
may choose to eat with their family. Although some family members may come back
very late, most family likes to wait for them and eat together. This is not a
rule, but it is kind of our food culture. So, when I was in high school, I
would choose to have lunch with a group of classmates and most of time I would
went home for dinner because I knew that my parents were waiting for me. After
I come to America, although I also make some good friends here, but it is
really hard for me to have lunch with them. We have totally different time
schedule and some time we even do not have time to eat. So, the only thing we
can do is eat together of dinner, because Chinese people believe that eat
together is the best way to keep the relationship.

The food culture of Guangdong “Zao Cha”
In
Saturday morning, I went to a Chinese restaurant called “starkitchen”. it is
the only restaurant that make southern China’s breakfast in Denver. It opens at
9 o’clock every day and the breakfast close at 2:00 pm. The food they make for
breakfast is traditional Guangdong desert and it tastes really similar with the
restaurant in our country. So, many students in DU and Chinese people who live
in Denver really enjoy the food there. I can always see some students study in
DU who does not have classes in the morning go there for breakfast.
I
went to the starkitchen on Saturday afternoon at about 1:30 pm, because in this
way I could see the difference between breakfast and dinner. The star kitchen
was always full of people, so, I waited for about 10 minutes to get a sit. In the
starkitchen, you could also share a table with others who was waiting for a sit;
however, I did not like to sit with others. I came here with three of my
friend, after the waiter lead us to the site; we began to watch the menu. All the
food here for breakfast is traditional desert like Shrimp Dumpling, Steamed
Beef Meat Ball and Baked BBQ Pork Bun. Most of Chinese people like to eat thing
made of flour, so, the dishes we ordered were most like dumplings and bread. When
we order the dishes, we do not need to tell the waiter that what we want and
let them cook together. There was some food cars in the restaurant, and all the
food they have were on the car. These dishes were really small, so, by this
way, you could not only see what did the food look like and how large it was,
but also you could get the fresh food whenever you want. This kind of breakfast
is very popular in Guangdong; they liked to come with their friends on business
together because Chinese people believe that having a meal with others was
really a good way to communicate. So, people in Guangdong do not called this
meal breakfast, they have their own name of this king of meal---“zao cha”. In Guangdong,
most of people have a very open mind; there is the only place in China that
people do not care about if you are graduated in a famous university. People in
Guangdong believe that if you work hard and have a clever mind, you can be
success. So, many young people in China like to go to Guangdong to start their
own business. In this way, Guangdong becomes a really important city, and more
and more people begin to have their friends on business. A talk of a business
idea always need a lot of time, so, people in Guangdong like to find a quiet
place and have a talk with their partners. The words “zao cha” is means drink
tea with friends in the morning, and Chinese people think that a good environment
can help them to have a clear mind. So, drinking tea and having some desert
become very popular in Guangdong. So, the food car can help people to get some
hot and fresh food whenever they want.
Most
of the people in the restaurant are from the southern part of China, include
the waiters. I could easily find that these people had a Guangdong accent when
they are talking. Many of them came here with the whole family, for those Chinese
people who lived in Denver; it was really hard to find a Chinese restaurant
like this. Actually, you could find that more than 50 percent Chinese who lived
in America were from the province like Guangdong or Fujian; this could also
show that people from these places like to show their ability and make a living
wandering from place to place.

I come to the USA, I feel people are so busy every day. When I saw Americans
doing their work, they always finish it as soon as possible. Also, when they
have a talk with someone, they always catch the point quickly and say something
clearly and directly. This is not the life style I used to have in our country.
I have read an article named “Some Thoughts on the Guangdong Breakfast Tea” which
is written by MR.JI, and I really agree with his point that why can’t we sit in
a tea house talk and laugh like with old friends.

the connections between food and culture
After
reading the article “The Cultural Politics of Eating in Shenzhen” which is written
by Mary Ann O’donnell and the article “ ‘BreakingBread with a Spread’ in a San
Francisco County Jail” which is written by Sandra Cate, I find some connections
between the food and the culture. Food sometimes even can change people’s habits
in their daily life.
In
the first article which introduces the food and culture in Shenzhen, the author
tells us how the food affects their life. He tells us the difference between
the food eating by northern and southern people. People from the northern China
lie to eat pork or beef, but people from southern part of China like Shenzhen
like to eat fish. Catching fish is a really hard skill, you must have a quick eye
and hand, so, people in Shenzhen is cleverer than people from other places and
especially good at business. There are also some different between old Shenzheners
and new Shenzheners when they choose their food. Old Shenzheners have their own
culture, and they like to eat in some small restaurant like they always do
before. New Shenzheners do not have their food culture, they come to Shenzhen
because they have more chances here, and they want to have a better life. So,
new shenzheners more like to eat in some big restaurant which is cleaner.
In the cate’s article, he tells us a
food culture in the prison. At that time, the food in the jail were terrible
and the time schedule were also not enough logical, so, the prisoners would
feel very hungry at night. In order to solve this problem, prisoners began to
cook by themselves and they called this food “spread”. They material they used
to cook the spread were from the food they saved or buy from the store. This spread
had become a culture and taught them how to work together.
After reading these two articles, the
thing that interest me most is that because Shenzheners always catch fishes,
so, they become clever and good at business. I think something that makes you have
a good habit or practice a skill is really good for your life.

Two advertisements that interest me
Recently,
an advertisement that interests me a lot is an advertisement of Chinese milk
which is called “wang zai”. The whole advertisement is in Chinese. At first, a
little boy comes into the dining room after he plays outside. Suddenly, he sees
“wang zai” milk on the table. The can of the wang zai milk is in red and with a
cute little cartoon boy who has a big eyes and smile face on it. When the boy
see the can, he feel confused and says to the cartoon boy on the can that” why
are you looking at me, why are you always looking at me, if you keep looking at
me, I will drink you. After he drink it he feel enjoyable and says it is really
tastes good. It is a simple advertisement, and this kind of advertises is just
for attracting the young kids by its cute voice and cute cartoon logo. In
china, people all know that wang zai milk is a product of the wang wang company;
it is a very famous company of making the food of children. In the
advertisement, there are two reasons why they always shows people the logo, one
is because the cute cartoon logo is really attractive to the little kids, the
other reason is because they think the parents will knows it is a product of
their company.
There
is also another milk which is very popular in China called “te lun su”, and the
name of the milk is a Mongolian word which means “milk in a good quality”. This
milk is totally different from the “wang zai” milk, most adults like it because
people all believe that it is healthier than other milk. In the advertisement
of the “te lun su” milk, the main point is that it is good for people’s health,
and it uses a lot of data to improve this point of view. First of all, the
advertisement emphases the location of the factory, it says that the factory is
built on a very special place on 40th parallel of north latitude,
where is a place of Inner Mongolia. In this area both sunshine and land is one
of the world best place of to raise the milk cattle. The milk cattle of this
company are the best strains which are choosing from all over the world begin
in the year 2004. The feed of the cattle also have some different from the
other normal company, besides the local grass of Inner Mongolia, the feed also
includes the best grasses from 12 countries. The fringe benefits of the cows
make people feel jealous; they are the owner of the factory. They have their
own dining hall, bedroom and a room for milk, and people also give them some
music to make them feel relax. All the treatment of these cows is similar with
people. Nowadays, although the milk has already won a prize in the world as the
only Chinese milk in the list, they do not stop and give up improving
themselves.
In
this introduction of the “te lun su” milk, we can easily find that it is
totally different from the “wang wang” company’s advertisement. Not as the
first advertisement uses the cute voice and logo to attract kids, it uses a lot
of data to improve that it is better than other milk. The “meng niu” company is
also one of the most famous brands in China that most people have it every day.
“Te lun su” does not taste as good as “wang zai”, however, it catches adults’s
heart. Adults do not really care if the food they eat have brings them some
really good feelings; the only thing they cares about is if the food they eat
cloud brings some benefits to their bodies. From the whole advertisement, we
can see that all it includes like the location of the factory, the treatment of
the milk cattle, the prize they win in the world and the attitude they never
stop working is they want to show people that they have a very strict system
and they are the best choice in our country. There is also a detail that the
name of the mil is word “good quality milk” in Mongolian shows they are really
in a strong confidence. The slogan of the milk also shows that they are really
proud of their products that they say “not every milk can be named te lun su”.
Compare
the two advertisements, we can easily find that in China, children and adults
have two totally different food cultures. When children choose food, they just
think whether the advertisement is cute or not or whether the food taste good.
However, for adults, the most important thing they care is whether the food is
good for their health.

The connection between advertisement and language
After reading the article”
Class Distinctions in Potato Chip Advertising ” which is written by joshua
freedman and dan jurafsky, I find something really interesting about the
connection of advertising and language.
Every product has its own group of costumers, and the different
prices of the products shows the different social classes. If you want your group
of costumers accepts your product, a very important part is make a good
advertisement that attract them. For different social classes, they have
different needs of products.
There is a research of 12 different potato chips that
shows people how different in advertising between expensive one and cheaper
one. People who are in upper classes always buy the potato chip which is in a
higher price, in this kind of advertisement, the company always use some beautiful
words, and they also like to make some long sentences to make those upper
classes people feel that they are knowledgeable. Higher price Potato chips also
want to show it’s unique and comparative like “our unique baking process” or “least
fat than other leading brands”. Another important point is that they always say
that their potato chips is natural and healthy, because they know that people
in upper classes think health is much more important than money. For people who
are in lower classes, they more like potato chips in a lower price. In this
kind of advertisement, the company often use some simple words and short
sentences because in is more acceptable for those people who are not very knowledgeable.
For these kinds of potato chips, they more like to show people their
historicity and location like “using an old family recipe” or ”made in the
great Pacific Northwest”, which is totally different with the upper classes advertisement.
According to this passage, I learn that how to write a
good advertisement to different classes. I also find that this fit my products
like restaurants. Many small restaurant say that they have over 100 years doing
this, and also some big restaurant like to say how special and healthy their
raw materials are.

Chinese food system and culture
Chinese
people believe that food is the most important thing in the food; so, many of
us spend a lot of time on studying how to cook better in our life time. No matter
you are rich or not and the material you use is good or not, people in our
country will always find a way to make the material to the best dishes.
China
is a really big country, and each province in china has its own cooking system.
I am come from Beijing, and we also have our own cooking system. However,
because Beijing is the capital city of China, so, there are many people who
come from other province come to Beijing every year, and the population of
these people ia much more than the locals. In order to let people from other
province can have their own food in Beijing, so, many restaurant of other
cooking system come out in Beijing. So, Beijing’s food system is more like a
combination of the whole country. Most of the local Beijingers enjoy this kind
of life because they can have the food all over the country but do not need to
go to other province.
How do the “old
Beijingers” eat?
There
is a word “old Beijingers” in our country, it is means a group of people whose family
have lived in Beijing hundreds or even thousands of years. They are the real
local people of Beijing, they lives in “hutong” which is totally different from
the tall building in down town. Because of this, they have they own culture and
a food system which is totally different from others. The food that “old Beijingers”
eat is really taste strange, which people from other province or even young
people who born in Beijing cannot really bear it. “Old Beijingers” have a
really simple food system; they eat one kind of food nearly every day. There is
a food called “douzhi” that “old Beijingers” have it every breakfast, however,
other people cannot even bear the smell of it, actually nearly none of the
people around me can eat this.
How do people normally eat?
For most of people, we have really a lot of choices for
what we eat. For breakfast, some people learn the western country to eat eggs,
breads and drink milk. However, most of us like to have something make of flour
for breakfast like “baozi”, “youtiao” and noodle. People also like to drink
porridge in the morning because they believe it is good for our health. All of
these are Chinese traditional food.
People in our country believe that launch is
as important as dinner, but there is still some difference between this to meals.
For
launch, usually we do not have enough time to have a great meal because we need
to go to school and our parents need to go to work. When we are at school, the
only thing we can eat for launch is the restaurant around us. Most of them are
western restaurant because it is really quick to eat western food. However, the
tastes of these restaurants are not the same as what I eat in American, I think
these restaurant change their style more fit the locals. At that time, pizza
hut is the restaurant which I like most, you can not only have western food
like pizza food there, but also you can order some Chinese food like fried rice
which really taste like our local food.
Dinner
is always the biggest meal in our day, because we have enough time to enjoy
this meal. Especially because my mother is a teacher, so, she finishes her work
earlier than others and has enough time to prepare this meal for us. I always
believes that my mom is a good cook and she can cook different dishes and do
not have anything the same for a whole week. In our country, people nearly eat
rice or flour every day. Because I like to eat things which are really salty or
spicy, so, I need more than a bowl of rice for each meal. I like to eat meat
much more than vegetables, especially the lamb, which is really hard to find in
America. I really like to eat hot pot, and most of the Chinese like it. In our
city, the best restaurant which cook hot pot is called “HAIDILAO”, you need to
wit every day since it opens. The food I like most for hot pot is lamb and
meatball, and I go there every week. I especially like the sesame sauce there, a
good sauce is one of the most important thing for hot pot.
If
you want to find something to eat at midnight, the best choice all over the
country is the meat string, which all people like it. It is like some small
meat piece string together and baked on fire. You can find this everywhere and
it really smells and tastes good.
Food is a really
important part of China, and it is well connect with our country. In America, people
eat turkey in Thanks Giving day to celebrate the holiday. However, in ancient China,
in order to find a reason for them to eat something good, poor people found many
festivals for this. So, if you want to eat something taste good and special,
come to China.

The reflection paper of the two articles
After
reading the two articles “Home Run: My Journey Back to Korean Food”
and “eating white”, we can find a common that people always like to eat things
which they always have at home since they are children. Another similarity is that both of them
connect the food they like with the memory of their mothers.
In
the first article “Home Run: My Journey Back to Korean Food”,
the author Roy Ahn is an American born Korean. When he was young, his mom
always cooked Korean food for him and he really liked it. He thought that the
food his mom cooked for him included her love. When his mom was alive, there
are two refrigerators in his home, one was for Korean food and the other one
was for American food, which he always wanted to combine them together. After his
mom dead, once he went to a Korean restaurant, however, he ordered a wrong
dish. This made him uncomfortable because he was afraid of forgetting thing
about Korean cultures which his mom told him. So, he tried to know more about Korean,
and he also taught his kids some Korean culture to let him know more about his
hometown.
In
the second article “eating white”, the author’s mom like to eat food in white
colors like white cheese and white bride. She thought that white food meant a
white soul because she was a CATHOLIC. The white food was the only food made
her felt comfortable. The author’s dad do not like white food, he only likes
meats and desserts. So, the only thing his mom and dad can eat together is creamy
mashed potatoes. The author was more similar with his mom; he thought white
food was really tasty. He had a really hard time after he came to American
because of the food.
I
think my mom is a good cook. When I was at home, she always cooked different Chinese
food for me every day and I really enjoyed them. After I come to American, at
first, I think that American food is good because it is something new for me. A
month later, I really cannot eat American food anymore because it is too simple
and do not have any changes. Pizza, humbugger and french-fries is all thing in American
food.

in class writing
The last meal I had was
in yesterday, I had my dinner in jason’s thai which was a Chinese restaurant
near our school. I went there with 5 of my friends. Although all of us have a
meal plan at school, the taste of food in school do not really fit us. Because
jason’s thai is the only restaurant near the school, it is just ten minutes’
walk from our dorm to there, so, it is always the first choice of us although
is do not really taste good. We had gone there so many times, so we already
know which one we should choose. We had six people, so, we ordered five dishes
and an 8 pieces sushi. I ordered a dish made of lamb, which is really hard to
find in Denver because I nearly never saw lamb in other restaurants. There was
also a drink which really taste good called thai tea in the restaurant, but no
one ordered it last night. Because we always went there before, so, the service
is quite okay, that a thing we not really satisfied with the restaurant before.
I think that one thing most of the American restaurant does better than Chinese
restaurant is the service. Finally, we had our dinner about an hour’s long, and
I think it may be much more quickly if we choose an American restaurant.
